The Secret Text Message is the title of the first lesson packet in The STEM-LA Initiative, Module One: Using Cryptographs In Education and its not a textbook. However, it is the first of two collections of instructional packets designed to support the Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) Initiative. Language arts (LA) was added to the mix to reflect how important this subject had been to my career as a Electronic Communication Analyst in the USAF.
This text is the first in a series of STEM related lesson packets containing original lesson plans, instructional text, review sheets, question and answer widgets, charts, figures, diagrams and commercial quality instructional puzzles and games.
These packets were designed to begin teaching students the connective that exist between the basic elements of the Communication Technologies and the math, science and language arts being taught in K-16 institutions.
Lesson 01, The Secret Text Message, uses cryptographs to teach students about a type of character substitution coding scheme similar to the computer coding process that uses a sequence of ones and zeros (1100101 = e, US ASCII Code) to present various characters within a messages.
The repetitive nature of these lessons will also increase a student's ability to better focus on details, follow instructions and will reveal the knowledge that students have acquired of prefixes, suffixes and other letter patterns, just by being readers.
